Thinking of buying a bully??

Bull Terriers are not a breed for everyone, you may well love the breed but that doesn't mean that they are suitable for your life style or that you are suitable for theirs.

Please take the time to find out that a Bully really will be an asset to your family before committing to one.

So you have decided that a bull terrier is for you.......... so what now?

How should you go about finding your very own bully?

This is not something that should be rushed into, you need to do your homework, never buy a puppy on impulse!!

A good starting point would be your local bull terrier club, they will be able to tell you

about any shows which are coming up and you will be welcome to visit and speak to

breeders and see their dogs. It is also a very good idea to go to a dog show if you have

not seen many bull terriers before as you will she dogs and bitches, whites and

coloureds.

If you are lucky enough to find a breeder who is about to have pups have a chat with

them about when the pups will be born and what colours they expect to have,

In return expect to be questioned at great length about your life and home (it's a bit like

going for a job interview).

Q: Questions you should be asked

Do you work/what hours?

A: A bull terrier should never be on his own all day while his owners are out at work!!

Q:Where will the puppy be living?

A: Bull terriers should be living indoors, not shut out side in a kennel.

Q: Do you have a garden?

A: Bull terriers need to have a garden in which to play in, and to toilet train. Bull

terriers should not live in flats. The garden needs to be very well fenced, with no holes

or weak fencing.

Q: Do you have any other animals?

A: If you already have a male dog then you must have a bitch pup and the dog needs

to be neutered, a male bull terrier will not live with another male dog, also some breeds

do not mix well together.

If you already have a bitch that is older then you can go for a dog or bitch.

Warning... Never buy two puppies the same age or even a year apart, they will fight!

Do you have any children and how old are they? Some people don't like to sell to

people with small children as bull terrier puppies can be boisterous.

These are just a few of the questions that you should be asked, if you are not asked

then you should not be buying from those breeders....if they don't care where their

puppies are going then they don't care how they are raised!

In return you need to know about you future puppy, can you meet mum?

What health tested have mum and dad had?

Are the puppies BAER tested?

What after sales care do you get?

Is the puppy kennel club registered?

Will he be tattooed?

Do you get a diet sheet?

Do you get a copy of his pedigree?

Has he breeding terms or restrictions?

It is most important that you meet mum and make sure she is happy and healthy

although they can look very thin when feeding a litter.

You should be allowed to visit your new puppy when he is about 4 weeks old.

And he should be allowed to come to his new home when he is about 8 weeks

If you go to look at a litter and you are not happy with what you are told or see then

don't buy! There will be more puppies soon.
